Corporate valuation assignment

Here’s a group report on the valuation of an Australian company. It had a page limit of 10 and we scored surprisingly well, 90%.

See attached file for full report.

Fixed income assignment

This is a group project assignment in my Masters course for fixed income in which we attained pretty good marks: 28/30. Putting it up here for reference. The topic is as follows:

On 1 January 2005, you are considering two investment opportunities. A six month risk-free bond with 4% p.a. coupon is priced at 98.45. It has a $1,000 par value and will mature on 30 June. Alternatively, you could invest in a one-day risk-free short-term note for which the return for the six-month period (1 January 2005 to 30 June 2005) is currently unknown. You are provided with the historical yields of the note. Using only the information provided, would you purchase the bond or the note? Write a report giving your recommendation.

One week to go before home for the winter vacation!!

Just one more week left for Singapore. Having Singaporean food cravings already. Really sick of eating the stuff at Norton Street and Newtown :-( I would much rather eat my own cooking if not for the fact that the kitchen is 2 floors below :P

Just finished my accounting paper for the day, was manageable but didn’t go fantastically because of the time constraints. I hope I can get at least a distinction (let’s not go to HD). Next week is the killer M&A and financial modelling exams. I’m not too worried about the latter though cos I’ve already passed the exam from the mid term and project results.^^ Was really happy about the project grades for modelling (38/40!!). That was the hardest project I’ve had to handle so far in Sydney Uni and the effort paid off. While I hated the project when I was doing it, I’m glad for doing it at the same time too because of the exposure it has given me to Monte Carlo simulation, exotic options, portfolio optimisation, company valuation etc. In regular finance class we just learn two asset portfolio optimisation which uses simplified mathematical formulas. In spreadsheet modelling I actually get to see how multi asset portfolios are obtained through inverse matrix operations. Really cool. The Benninga textbook has really been useful and when I finally graduate I’ll try to make the effort to learn more of the stuff in detail.

Pseudo blogger

I guess it’s not hard to figure out that my ‘blogger’ status is more of a semi-hobby than a passion :p The truth is ever since I graduated from university in Singapore the desire to pen my feelings doesn’t come as naturally anymore. Even though I set up this pretty nice-looking (I hope!) blog, frankly I’m more interested in the design and implementation (Drupal) of it rather than the actual content. I could spend hours tweaking this functionality and adding this plugin and that but frankly the actual usage doesn’t justify the effort taken to implement. ^^

Nevertheless, I think the start of my Masters course in Sydney should warrant at least a couple of posts so here I am, more than a month since I reached here. To be fair to myself, I didn’t actually get internet connection till the end of last month (thanks Telstra, geez)..

Moving to Sydney

As some of you already know, I will be taking up a Master in Commerce course in Sydney that would last 18 months. The course will commence mid-July. Exciting and a bit scary at the same time. I’m quite attached to my family and have never been away from them for more than a month before. I guess it’s time I became more independent. In the last month I’ve been (re)learning how to cook (pasta, sweet sour pork, chicken with sesame sauce etc.)— a basic need for survival!

"More Ethics, Less Aesthetics" of Bio-Art. Discuss with Examples.

The following essay was written for a module in my university called ‘New Media Art’ for the Jan-May semester in which I scored an A+ ^_^ A word of caution: While I’ve tried to be as accurate as I can while stating facts, I cannot guarantee that I’m 100% correct. If you’re doing a module similar to this: do not copy, do not cheat.

Real vs Virtual Museums

Compare and contrast, with the help of the relevant sources, your experience as viewer in a real museum setting such as NUS’s, and a virtual setting exemplified by a museum’s website of your choice: What are the pros and cons of each setting? What are the differences in the way exhibits are presented? Which of the two settings (the physical or the virtual) is more successful in educating the viewer?

Preservation of power and authority amongst the upper orders of administration in Tokugawa Japan

This is an average grade (B+) mid-term essay that I did for a modern Japanese history module. I decided to put in here because the Tokugawa-Edo era of Japan has fascinated me for a while, and I just wanted to remind myself of the first month of my study of Japanese history.

The Evolution & Fate of the Universe

The ultimate fate of the universe holds a perpetual fascination with mankind. Ever since Hubble discovered in 1929 that the universe is expanding, people have wondered whether the universe would continue expanding forever, or whether its expansion would one day come to a halt and be reversed, leading eventually to a “big crunch”. In this essay, you should trace through the pioneering work of Hubble, Einstein and others, and review modern cosmological theories as well as current evidence for the fate of the universe.
