Move to Drupal: 80% complete!

An update! after, what, 8 months of procrastination? It’s been so long since I last posted a blog entry that I’ve nearly forgotten how to write. This site has finally been Drupalised — after playing 睨めっこ with my trusty (but bulky) DELL trinitron over the past week, after work and over the weekend. The catalyst for this decision was the wonderful relevation that Drupal 4.7 beta now supports unicode MySQL properly. This means that my Japanese and Chinese words no longer look rubbish in phpmyadmin. How nice is that? Over the next few weeks, you will see more embellishments to this web space, and more importantly, updates (I hope!) to this blog. I can’t wait for Drupal 4.7 to be final which would mean more cool modules. I’m such a sucker for the taxonomies in Drupal. I’ve always been obsessed about cataloging things — as seen from my old Mythology webbie and my Led Zep bootleg collection — which makes Drupal my blogger’s ambrosia. :-P

Remote server SQL export/import woes *Fixed*

The following is only for my future reference and should not realy interest anyone else unless that person is facing a similar problem as I did.

Goal:

To import multilingual data from remote hosting to production server on PC, ensuring that nothing is corrupted in the process.

Problem definition:

MySQL database located on webhost (Server 1) did not import correctly multilingual text correctly. Webhost’s character set was set to latin1 whereas production server on PC (Server 2) was set to UTF-8. One is able to check the settings of the servers by typing show variables in mysql shell.

Unicode Nightmare

Migrating from MySQL4.0 to 4.1 is a complete nightmare for one whose webserver is remotely located and whose account is equipped with insufficient administrative rights. I’ve learnt quite a lot in the past two days, but suffered a great deal of grief throughout the journey.

Was it all worth it?”, is something that I’ve been asking myself the day I began web designing…

疲れ切った私…

Well, Sidney's all right now.

Well, Sidney’s all right now. He really scared the hell out of us on Monday. Me on the other hand? I can’t say that things have been great for me these past few days. It fact, it’s been horrible. I’ve got projects due within the next 2.5 weeks before I head for my exams. I’ve been only having about 4 hours of sleep a day, while the faculties of my mind are constantly being overworked. Just earlier, I spent about 10 hours on a programming assignment and I’m still far from completing it. I don’t think I’ll be able to completely satisfy the requirements by its due date which is next Saturday. Then there’s that database group project (which isn’t so bad since there are 5 people working on it, unlike this programming assignment where the scope is wider and the group comprises of only 3 members), and that 4000 word New Media essay of which I’ve only written down about 500 words. Urrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh…..

Me and my boring life

My life is incredibly boring. Boring, boring, BORING. Every week’s the same routine. Monday school, Tuesday school …and yada yada. The only things that add a little ‘variety’ to my life are the occasional (or not-so-occasional) exams, tests, presentations. Things I don’t really appreciate, thank-you-very-much. Even yoga, something that I really enjoy, has become part of my weekly schedule. Of course, that’s not a bad thing, but what I’m concerned about is the fact that nothing changes, nothing deviates.

Blogging is something I do when I want to rant about the monotony of my life. If I can do nothing to change the schedule-like manner in which it operates, I might as well accept while providing myself a room to complain about it.

Yes, complaining can make life a little more bearable.

See, right now, I’m supposed to be studying for my bloddy database test on Tuesday but I’m on the verge of falling asleep. And I want to stay awake because I haven’t gotten much into my brain. And yet, REALLY don’t want to.

Blog Overdose

Oh man, judging from the no. of blog entries I’ve been making these past few days, I think I’ve been spending wayyy too much time online. I think I’m going to start cutting down my online time next week after my stupid database exam is done. =(

Feeling Jittery

I’m feeling jittery at the moment. School makes me feel nauseaus sometimes. I think it’s definitely the homework. I had pretty great day earlier, an interesting lecture in the morning, lunch with some friends in the business faculty canteen. When I got home, I did a bit of surfing, spent some minutes on some yoga postures, and after that, TV for an hour.

So I thought: okay, maybe it’s time to check out what homework I may have been assigned. I drop by one of my computing modules’ website (database module), and lo and behold, I see 6 tutorial questions that I have to get done by next Monday. Suddenly I don’t quite feel so good anymore.

I attempted the first tutorial question and decided to give up. It wasn’t too difficult but it’s really tedious. I wasn’t in the right frame of mind then, and neither am I now. Maybe I’m just tired. I’ve been sleep deprived for various reasons these couple of days - yoga may be my spiritual caffaine that supplements me with energy to overcome lethargy, however, it can only do so much before exhaustion creeps in once again.
