Ashes of Time Alternate DVD Cover
Once, when I was at a Wong Kar Wai forum, a guy posted a DVD cover that he had made for an amature design competition, as an alternative to the official Hong Kong DVD release of Ashes of Time. Seeing his work, I was also inspired to produce my take, the film being one of my all-time favourites. Around that time, I had ordered and just received a copy of the Japanese edition of the official soundtrack (gorgeous, lush soundtrack I might add).
The CD cover and inserts were printed on rough porous paper, which was lovely. It reminded one of the desert. Wanting to maintain a consistant look between the CD and the DVD, I decided to scan one of the images found in the the CD inserts, and digitially edited and blended it with a official still of the movie, together with a series of small photos to create a translucent rice-paper effect. I tested the print on some high DPI inkjet paper and found the result quite pleasing. I prefer it the official release which I feel was hastily done, as most Hong Kong DVD covers are.

hi, ashes of time is my
hi,
ashes of time is my favorite movie too. i have got the soundtrack but not the jap edition. and my CD cover is the one with all the characters on it. the cover looks really cool. may i know where you got ur soundtrack from? and anyway wong ka wai got ma-yoyo to edit the soundtrack for the new version of ashes of time. i wonder how it sounds. well, good day. nice to know that there are others who like to film too. :)
I got mine from Amazon Japan
I got mine from Amazon Japan a few years ago. The movie is called Rakuen no Kizu in Japanese, which translates roughly to “The Flaw of Paradise”: 楽園の瑕. The packaging, like most Japanese packaging, is superb. The cover of the Japanese DVD edition is really nice, but the price was so scary at that time and I wasn’t sure what the quality looked like so I didn’t dare invest in it.
I can’t wait for the new version of Ashes of Time. I hope it’s a major improvement although I really love the film as it is. To be honest I’m a bit scared that he might remove my favourite elements from the film (like the introduction, which was missing in the French version and the main reason why I did not upgrade earlier). If he were only to improve the quality of the image so I can replace my Mei Ah dvd, I would be happy as it is. I just wish he’d have a double edition, one with the original cut and one with the new cut, both remastered.
